Today’s photo was taken on the way to a training appointment with a German Shepard Dog. Directions to a home can be interesting here in Hawaii. One gets used to finding landmarks rather than street signs to find a driveway to a home. This driveway was just south of the Komo store, makai side (means ocean side of the road), it’s about 1/2 mile, one lane only. Oh yeah, and it looks like you are entering the enchanted Hawaii forest!
As I talked with the owners of this German Shepherd I observed her. I didn’t try to reach for her, try to make it seem like “I’m a dog person”, you must like me. I just watched this brilliant dog assess the situation.
It didn’t take her long. She came around. She let me give her a little bit of direction and then she kept coming nearby me. Standing. Sniffing. Sitting. She knew the whole deal meant she would be much more appreciated. And she knew I’d be able to explain the way she thinks and learns.
For me, it was another lesson in letting go of the outcome. I think many owners as well as dog trainers get caught up in how am I going to make this dog do what I want and miss the part about learning how to really communicate with one another.
How to Communicate with Dogs (and People)
Sometimes it’s really not about how loud you voice your opinion, or how hard you try to make something happen. More often than not, true communication comes from listening, watching, and observing.
Coco, the German Shepherd lives an enchanted life, down and an enchanted lane in Hawaii. Her people now know how she thinks and learns. She is prancing her GSD prance and wagging big. Her owners are proud. Listening is good.
Without practice change is difficult. As permanent as we try to make our lives, dogs included, change is present. Those who learn to embrace change find a sense of content, they learn to leave fear behind and live a life filled with more joy, more wags, more of what you want.
Big change is coming to my training programs. Look for more running with dogs, natural remedies and cooking for dogs, and more on how dogs think and learn. Subscribe to REVIBE | Dogs + Joy + Vibrance and get more of what you want with your dog too!
